On this auspicious day of Holi, I’m feeling all elated to share my 2 cents on this day. Holi is celebrated all over India, for several reasons. As folklore goes, there is a collection of many stories. Two of them come to my mind :
Holi marks the end of Hirnyakshipu (a demon) by none other than Lord Narayana (Vishnu) by taking a form of Narasimha (half human/ half beast). It seems that Hirnyakshipu was granted a boon that he could literally not be killed by a man or animal and many other boons. His son Prahlada (who is a devotee of Lord Narayana)l was tied up by him and the arrogant demon put him on fire. Prahlada was at the lap of the demon’s sister Holika. Nothing happens to Prahlada, as Holika covers him with her clothing and herself gets burnt. Thus, protecting Prahlada. When Hiranyakshipu asks Prahlada where his God is, he says everywhere. And Lord Narayana appears as Narasimha from the pillar and kills the demon Hiranyakshipu, with his bare hands.
Holi symbolizes the winning of faith over arrogance. A true believer like Prahlada is never alone, because he carries the Lord in his heart. The lord never lets down a true believer. The lord is the most gracious and most merciful. Strange are his ways. Bhakti (devotion) is our shortcut to the lord’s bosom. So, pray with all your heart, and then simply wait. All your prayers are heard, but persevere. If things don’t happen as you wish, know that the Lord has better plans for you. Accept things as they are, and just because one or some of your wishes didn’t come true, don’t despair. You are blessed, whether you pray or not. And remember, there is no cause of worry, as the Lord is everywhere.
The other story that I know is of Lord Krishna, playing with gopis (maidens). They play with all colors. The colors represent the awakening of jnana.(knowledge). Jnana is very important, as light takes away darkness, jnana gives us the wisdom. When the wisdom of life dawns upon you, when you see the multiple colors of the e world drowned in the seven colors of the rainbow, know that you are walking on the path of the righteous.
To reiterate, here are some Holi truths:
- The victory of light over darkness.
- Journey from ignorance to awakening
- The burning of all negativities in us.
- Realize that the good kind Lord is everywhere.
- Colors mark the awakening of Wisdom
- Trust in the Lord, as he provides for everyone
May the Lord bless you and keep a smile on your face always.
You are special.
