The people because of whom we see progress in the sphere of science and its tools (technology) are all the great scientists who keep the momentum going. From the time that man lit the first fire by rubbing stones together, there have been great strides of discovery till today. We have progressed so much that the convenience that we enjoy today is simply breath-taking. The new generation is a real

lucky one. Today we take the internet as a given. (at least most of the parts of the world) In my days (Generation X) the television was a privilege to have. We used to watch the channels whose transmission was over the air. Today if you compare it with satellite television, it seems so primitive. We used to have telephone landlines. Today that has largely been replaced by mobile phones. And not just for making calls, we can also use the internet on the phones.

Scientists work on a hypothesis. At first, they get the theory right. Once that has been figured out they build the tools which are used to demonstrate their theory. Sometimes, years are spent validating a concept. Other times it may take days. Any which ways, once the proof of the concept is delivered, the tool becomes a catalyst in the story of progress. These inventions are discoveries that have taken shape in minds of great people. A scientist is somebody who believes in the mathematics of things. As you know mathematics underlies the bottom of everything from physics, chemistry, and biology, right in that order. There are simple and complex mathematical theorems. Some of them are still mysterious and don’t have proofs. But they work. Constants like PI are very difficult to explain; however, they are there staring at you.

Today scientists have claimed to have discovered the ‘God Particle’ – ‘Higgs-Boson-Particle’. But still it is elusive. Its like a football field where you can see that somebody (God) has hit a goal and you can see the nets swaying because of the ball, but there is no ball. He/She is holding us in His/Her bosom. Like the Tao-Te-Ching describes ‘Him/Her’, He/She walks besides us or rather behind us (or was that ahead of us) and when the time comes to celebrate, He/She is nowhere to be seen. Like the great Sun. He/She guarantees that He/She will come up everyday and set every evening. Impartial to everyone. Gives light to all, irrespective of caste, creed or religion. Scientists have just reached the tip of the iceberg.

What lies below (unseen) is much much more than what we can ever discover. Like the saying in Lion King, ‘There’s more to be seen that can ever be seen …’.

Scientific theory today has become quite profound in the sense that there are people like Donald Hoffman who have a mathematical theory even for consciousness. I really don’t know how far it is true because consciousness is a tough nut to crack. Then there are futurists like Michio Kaku who portray a very optimistic view of the future. They are worth listening to. Knowing that one-day science will take us towards inter-stellar travel, a disease-free world and increasing convenience for the masses – ideas which we find hard to resist. It doesn’t end there. Science has made so much progress today in miniaturization that a mobile phone that you hold today is 100 times more powerful than all equipment that was used to put the first man on the moon. Science is progressing exponentially. And that is a good thing.

Now we come to the spiritual aspect of Science. The spirit is the cornerstone of all achievements. When we say that something has been discovered or invented, it’s not just the mind of the person who is involved in that, but also his/her soul. It’s the soul that discovers things and uses it for its own fulfillment. If you permit me a little folklore, it’s God discovering/inventing God itself. This journey traces back to the story of creation, where Purusha (Soul) entered everything in Prakriti (Nature). To understand its own greatness, God created the material universe and coalesced into each of the things to experience itself. And scientists are just one medium through which God experiences Him/Herself. Whether a scientist believes in God or not doesn’t matter. The soul of a scientist is that of a seeker – a discoverer of truth in the infinity of this grand and mysterious Universe.

God Bless !
