surrender

“Sarva dharmaan parityacha

Mame sharanam vraj “

means

“Leave everything and

Come into my shelter”

This are the words of Lord Krishna. He says to leave all worldly pleasures and things. Surrender to his will completely. He will take care of our needs. When adharma (bad things) increases in the world, the Lord manifests himself. To take care of the good people and to eradicate the bad. If you look at the history of our world, the lord has re-incarnated him/herself in every age.  There are four steps to reach God:

  • Sankhya (Soul realization)
  • Karma (Deeds)
  • Bhakti (Devotion)
  • Jnana (Wisdom)

Of this Sankhya is essential. Rest any of the options can lead us towards God. Realizing God is not an easy task. It’s not for the faint-hearted. We need to surrender to the will of God.

Is this possible? Yes, very much. A lot of people have forsaken their worldly affairs to turn themselves into monks and spiritualists. These people have clearly realized that material things do not make them happy. You have a billion dollars in the bank, but you are always angry or depressed. So, what’s the point of having so much money if you can’t utilize it properly for your happiness. Maybe you love to dance, or maybe you love to help others. Whatever may be your dream, you can make it come true if you have money. However, one thing you cannot buy with money is time. Some people think that money is the root cause of evil. Well, that’s not correct. Money gives us a sense of freedom. Money has been responsible for the progress of mankind over the years. So coming back to our topic – can we renounce our attachments and lead a life of a sanyasi.

If you read the Bhagvad Gita, mention is made of four phases of our life:

  • Youth (1-25 years)
  • Adult (25-50 years)
  • Middle Age (50-75 years)
  • Old age (more than 75 years)

These years are just guidelines. In this classification, the old age is the time when a person has to take up Sannyasa and thereby renouncing the world. For some people it may be earlier than that and for some others it may be afterwards. Know this – Desires are not bad, but the attachment to them is. So that’s what Lord Krishna says: Leave all your attachments and come under my shelter. I’ll provide for you.

Now, we don’t have to wait till old age to tread the path of spirituality. We can start when we are young. Totally forsake all attachments and walk the path of the righteous. No matter whatever stage in life you are at, one day you will realize that there are much bigger things outside your castle. You will also feel emptiness, despite your achievements. It’s time to wake up. So, put on your dancing shoes and get ready, except that this time you must forget yourself when you dance. Also, you have to be 100% attentive and live life simply. So, detach yourself from everything and surrender to His/Her mercy. He/She is very kind and will take care of you like a mother or father who cradles you in their arms.
